DICK POWELL
Born: November 14, 1904 in Mountain View, Arkansas
Died: January 02, 1963 in West Los Angeles, California
Richard Ewing "Dick" Powell, born on November 14, 1904, in Mountain View, Arkansas, was an accomplished American actor, singer, film producer, film director, and studio head. His career in the entertainment industry extended over four decades, marked by a broad range of roles across genres. In the 1930s, Powell achieved significant fame as a song-and-dance man in Warner Bros. musicals such as "42nd Street" (1933) and "Gold Diggers of 1933" (1933). However, in a marked departure from these light-hearted roles, he successfully transitioned to hard-boiled roles in film noirs in the mid-1940s, beginning with "Murder, My Sweet" (1944), in which he convincingly portrayed the character Philip Marlowe.
In addition to his acting career, Powell also distinguished himself as a director and producer. In 1953, he directed the cult classic sci-fi film "The Conqueror," noted for its casting of John Wayne as Genghis Khan. Powell was one of the founders of Four Star Television, a successful television production company, demonstrating his ability to influence the industry from both in front of and behind the camera.
