DIEGO RIVERA (1886-1957) was a Mexican painter and muralist whose imagery reflected his politically radicalism and anti-clericalism. (He was expelled from the Mexican Communist Party, and Soviet exile Leon Trotsky lived in his home for a time. Rivera, a notorious womanizer, had two tempestuous marriages to fellow artist Frida Kahlo (1929-1939, 1940-1954). He was commissioned to make several large-scale murals in the US, causing a furor with their left-wing imagery. (His "Man at the Crossroads" in Rockefeller Center was destroyed after viewers complained that it included a heroic image of Lenin.)
