DOLORES HOPE
Born: May 27, 1909 in New York City, New York
Died: September 19, 2011 in Toluca Lake, California
Dolores Hope, née DeFina, was born on May 27, 1909, in New York City's Harlem neighborhood, and rose to prominence as an American singer and philanthropist. While less known for her acting, Hope's contributions to entertainment and philanthropy made a lasting impact.
As a young woman, Hope pursued a singing career, adopting the stage name Dolores Reade. In 1933, she was discovered by popular comedian Bob Hope while performing at the Vogue Club in New York City. The two were married in 1934, a union that lasted until Bob's death in 2003.
Hope made few film appearances, with her most notable role being in "Thanks for the Memory" (1938). However, she was a frequent performer on her husband's USO tours, entertaining American troops overseas during World War II and the Korean and Vietnam Wars. She was often referred to as the "First Lady of the USO."
In the 1950s, Hope largely retired from public performance to focus on her family and philanthropy. She and her husband became prominent philanthropists, supporting numerous causes. Hope served as the chair of the Bob Hope Charitable Foundation, which made significant donations to numerous causes, including the Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage, California.
On her 84th birthday, Hope recorded her first album, "Now and Then." She continued to release music into her 90s, including a collection of her live performances from the USO tours, titled "Dolores Hope: Memories." Dolores Hope passed away at the age of 102 on September 19, 2011, at her home in Toluca Lake, California.
