In 1932, Schary began his Hollywood career as a screenwriter. His significant writing credits include "Big City" (1937) and "Boys Town" (1938), for which he won an Academy Award for Best Original Story. Schary's career took a significant turn when he joined Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) in 1948 as the head of production. Under his stewardship, MGM produced a series of successful films, including "An American in Paris" (1951) and "Ivanhoe" (1952). Outside of his production roles, Schary directed several films, including "Act One" (1963) and "Sunrise at Campobello" (1960), which was based on his Tony Award-winning play about Franklin D.
