Biography | show moreshow less
Doris Lessing (1919-2013) published her first novel, The Grass is Singing, in 1949, but her breakthrough novel, The Golden Notebook, appeared in 1962. Originally attracted to Marxism, she ultimately rejected the doctrine because it ignores the spiritual dimension of life. Her later works reflect her interest in Sufism. Lessing rejected a Damehood, but has accepted other honors from the Crown. In 2007 she became the oldest person ever to win the Nobel Prize for Literature. Others have called The Golden Notebook a feminist classic, but Lessing rejects that description. Time included it on its list of the 100 greatest English-language novels published since 1923.
