Died: December 12, 1939 in Santa Monica, California
Douglas Fairbanks Sr. was born on May 23, 1883, in Denver, Colorado and he was an American actor, screenwriter, director, and producer.
He began his career on the stage before transitioning to silent films. Fairbanks initially gained popularity through light comedies but achieved lasting fame in the 1920s as a swashbuckling hero in adventure films. He starred in a series of commercially successful and influential films, including The Mark of Zorro (1920), Robin Hood (1922), The Thief of Bagdad (1924), and The Black Pirate (1926). These productions showcased elaborate sets and pioneering special effects.
In 1919, Fairbanks co-founded United Artists with Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford, and D.W. Griffith. This venture allowed artists greater creative control and played a pivotal role in shaping the business structure of the film industry. That same year, Fairbanks married Mary Pickford, forming one of the first high-profile celebrity couples in Hollywood. Their Beverly Hills estate, Pickfair, became a social hub for the entertainment elite. Fairbanks was a key figure in establishing the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 1927 and served as its first president.
His final notable film appearance was in The Private Life of Don Juan (1934). After retiring from acting, Fairbanks traveled extensively and remained involved in film production.
