Denton A. Cooley (1920-2016), performed the first successful heart transplant in the U.S. (1968) and was the first surgeon to implant a total artificial heart in a human (1969). In 1962, he founded the Texas Heart Institute, of which he serves as President and Surgeon-in-Chief. Cooley and his associates have performed more than 100,000 open heart surgeries, more than any other group in the world, and Dr. Cooley has shared his expertise as the co-author of more than 1,300 scientific articles and a dozen books. Cooley and the legendary heart surgeon Dr. Michael DeBakey had a professional rivalry that lasted more than 40 years. They made amends in a public rapprochement on November 7, 2007, when DeBakey was 99 years old (Cooley was 87). The inscription about DeBakey and Cooley has been penned in what appears to be a secretary's hand which addresses his longstanding rivalry with Michael DeBakey.
