 Edward A. Burke (1839-1928) dominated Louisiana politics in the 1870s and 1880s. He managed the state's 1876 Democratic campaign and was elected State Treasurer in 1878. Publisher of the New Orleans "Times-Democrat", Burke was reelected. A reform movement within his party ousted him from office in 1888. In 1889 he was indicted for embezzlement of state bonds amounting to over $1 million. He never stood trial, escaping to Honduras where he lived until the age of 88.
