Biography
Edward Livingston Youmans (1821-1887) founded the Popular Science Monthly, now Popular Science magazine, in 1872. Youmans, who wrote science textbooks and advocated scientific education, also promoted the theory of evolution and the "Social Darwinism" of Herbert Spencer, and sought to make a scientific case for alcohol prohibition.
