Edward Stanley (1793-1862), who studied under John Abernethy, began his career as Assistant Surgeon to St. Bartholomew's Hospital in 1816 at the age of 24. Known for being one of the great teachers of his day, Stanley was Demonstrator of Anatomy and then Lecturer on Anatomy and Physiology at St. Bartholomew's before becoming President of the Royal Medico-Chirurgical Society in 1843. He was appointed Surgeon Extraordinary to Queen Victoria in 1858. In addition to his lectures, Stanley was well known for his writings and for his contributions to the Museum at St. Bartholomew's.
