Ned Buntline was the pen name of Edward Zane Carroll Judson (1813-1886). Buntline led an adventurous youth, running away from home at thirteen to become a cabin boy, and commissioned a Navy midshipman by President Buchanan after rescuing the occupants of a small boat. While in naval service he fought 7 duels. He resigned from the Navy, but served the Union during the Civil War as an Indian scout, being wounded 20 times! Amidst these adventures, Buntline (a pen name derived from the term for a nautical rope) had literary aspirations, getting his first story published at age 17 and starting his own fiction weekly, Ned Buntline's Own in 1848.
