Eliezer "Elie" Wiesel (1928-2016), who survived four Nazi death camps, published his powerful novel, Night, the first of his works dealing with Judaism, the Holocaust and human rights, in 1956. Wiesel, who served as Chairman of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Council from 1976-1986, was awarded the 1986 Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts on behalf of oppressed people worldwide. He and his wife, Marion, founded the Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity.
