Elizabeth Taylor was born Elizabeth Rosemond Taylor on February 27, 1932, in London, England and she held dual British and American citizenship.
Taylor's film debut was in There's One Born Every Minute (1942). Her role in National Velvet (1944), lead to a contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Her transition to adult roles included performances in Father of the Bride (1950) and A Place in the Sun (1951), Giant (1956), Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958), and Suddenly, Last Summer (1959). Taylor won her first Academy Award for Best Actress for BUtterfield 8 (1960) and her second for Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966). She also starred in Cleopatra (1963), becoming the first actress to earn $1 million for a film role.
Beyond acting, Taylor was a businesswoman, launching successful fragrance lines. She was also a prominent HIV/AIDS activist, co-founding the American Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR) in 1985 and establishing the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation in 1991. Her humanitarian efforts earned her the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award in 1993 and the Presidential Citizens Medal in 2001.
Throughout her career, Taylor received numerous accolades, including two Academy Awards, a BAFTA Award, and a Golden Globe Award. In 1999, the American Film Institute named her the seventh-greatest female screen legend in American film history.
