Elliot Lee Richardson (1920-1999) was Nixon's Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare, Secretary of Defense and Attorney General. On October 20, 1973, President Nixon ordered Attorney General Richardson to dismiss Special Watergate Prosecutor Archibald Cox, who had rejected Nixon's compromise to supply summaries of the "Watergate tapes". Richardson resigned rather than enforce President Nixon's order. He later served as Ford's Secretary of Commerce, his record fourth Cabinet post, from 1976-1977.
