Biography | show moreshow less
As of 1810, Napoléon Bonaparte (1769-1821) was at the height of his power; France controlled nearly all of Western Europe, with the Empire extending along the entire coast of the North Sea and the English channel and across to the southern tip of Italy. Napoleon's genius led to his advancement through the military ranks quickly; he was a general by the age of 24. Six years and several military expeditions later, he led a coup that put him in charge of France. In 1814, a coalition of European nations defeated the French Empire and forced Napoleon to abdicate. They exiled him to Elba. Incredibly, he escaped the island in February 1815 and gained control of France a second time! Three months later, he suffered his final military defeat at the Battle of Waterloo.
