Erwin Neher (born March 20, 1944, in Landsberg am Lech, Germany) is a distinguished German biophysicist known for his groundbreaking research in cell physiology. Together with Bert Sakmann, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1991 for their discovery concerning the function of single ion channels in cells, a feat achieved through the development of the patch-clamp technique.

Neher's academic journey began at the University of Munich, where he studied physics from 1963 to 1966. He later moved to the Max Planck Institute for Psychiatry in Munich to pursue his doctoral studies under the guidance of Dieter Lux. After obtaining his doctorate in 1970, he shifted his focus to biophysical research. The defining moment of Neher's scientific career was during his tenure at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in Göttingen, where he collaborated with Bert Sakmann. Their joint efforts led to the development of the patch-clamp technique in the late 1970s. This revolutionary method allowed researchers to measure the current flow through individual ion channels, a fundamental process in the nerve cell system. Their discovery had profound implications for the understanding of cell communication and has since become indispensable in the field of electrophysiology.

In addition to the Nobel Prize, Neher's contributions to science have been recognized with numerous awards, including the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize in 1987 and the Prince of Asturias Award in Scientific and Technical Research in 1996.
