Ethel Merman (1908-1984, born Ethel Agnes Zimmerman in Astoria, New York), became known as the "First Lady" of American musical comedy. She strutted her way across the stage during five decades of show-business success, beginning with her breakout in 1930's Girl Crazy and continuing on to memorable parts in Anything Goes, Annie Get Your Gun and Gypsy. I Got Rhythm from Girl Crazy and There's No Business Like Show Business from Annie Get Your Gun became her trademark songs. She also won a Tony Award for her role as Mrs. Sally Adams in Call Me Madam.
