Ferdinand Gottschalk (1858-1944) a veteran English stage actor, made several silent films, but excelled in character roles after the arrival of talkies. De Mille cast him as a dissolute Roman aristocrat in Sign of the Cross (1932) and Cleopatra (1934). Other notable roles included Grand Hotel (1932), Secret of the Chateau (1934) and Les Miserables (as Thenardier, 1935).
