Biography
Francis Hopkinson Smith (1838-1915), grandson of Declaration of Independence signer Francis Hopkinson, was an engineering contractor by profession. In that capacity he did important work, building several lighthouses and laying the foundation of the Statue of Liberty. However, Smith earned a second reputation as a painter and illustrator, illustrating works of Oliver Wendell Holmes and others. His reputation as an after dinner storyteller also grew, until he was urged to commit some of his stories to print. Thus, Smith embarked on yet a third career as a popular writer of short stories and travelogues.
