Biography
Harold "Fred" Fredericks, Jr. (born in 1929) took over drawing the comic strip, "Mandrake the Magician", in early 1965, shortly after the death of the strip's creator, Phil Davis, in 1964. Fredericks, who had worked for "The Press" of Atlantic City from 1947-1949, drew a strip, "Salty Ranks" after joining the U.S. Marine Corps in 1950. After his discharge in 1953, Fredericks, a veteran of the Korean War, began drawing historic strips and panels, including "New Jersey's Patriots" (1957-1959) and "Under the Stars and Bars" (1960). In 1960, he became a comic book artist, contributing to a number of Dell and Gold Key titles (as diverse as "Daniel Boone" and "The Blue Phantom") before taking over the "Mandrake" strip. Fredericks and his family moved to their home in Eastham, on Cape Cod, in 1972.
