Biography
Gene Tunney (1897-1978), captured the world heavyweight boxing crown by defeating Jack Dempsey in a unanimous 10-round decision (1926), won a 10-round rematch after coming back from a controversial long count (1927), picked up one more easy purse and then retired (1928). The highly literate and articulate Tunney served on the boards of several corporations. During World War II, he was director of athletics and fitness for the U.S. Navy. His son John was a Senator from California (1971-1977).
