Died: August 11, 1975 in Chevy Chase, Maryland
Biography
n WWII, General Anthony C. McAuliffe (1898-1975) was in command of the 101st Airborne Division during the successful defense of Bastogne, Belgium. Checking the German counterattack in the Ardennes on December 22, 1944, he made the famous reply "Nuts" to a surrender ultimatum of the surrounding German force. McAuliffe received the Distinguished Service Medal for his actions at Bastogne. The defense of Bastogne against overwhelming odds, carried out while bad weather grounded US air power, insured that Hitler's last gamble - his last chance to reverse the tide of battle on the Western front - would fail.
