David C. Jones (1921-2013) graduated from Roswell flying school in 1943 and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the US Army Air Corps- World War II. During the Korean War, the 19th Bomber Group under his command earned the nickname "Jones' bridge busters." He graduated from the National War College in 1960 and became the Air Force Chief of Staff (1974-78), serving as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1978-82 when he retired from military life. Jones is one of the few to reach such high rank without attending a service academy.
