Biography | show moreshow less
George Marshall (1880-1959) was Chief of Staff of the Army (1939-1945). He was promoted to the rank of Five-Star General of the Army in December 1944. Marshall reorganized and mobilized the military during World War II by coordinating training, planning for rearmament, supplying Great Britain with important material and finally directing the war. As Truman's Secretary of State (1947-1949), after succeeding in getting Congress to send aid to Greece and Turkey, Marshall fostered the European Recovery Program (called the Marshall Plan) to promote postwar economic recovery in Europe. He was awarded the 1953 Nobel Peace Prize for the Marshall Plan.
