Norman Schwarzkopf (b. 1934) graduated from West Point (1956) and served two tours of duty in the Vietnam War, where he was twice wounded and decorated with three Silver Stars, three Bronze Stars and the Distinguished Service Medal. In 1983, he was Deputy Commander of the U.S. invasion of Grenada. In 1991, Schwarzkopf commanded the successful allied invasion of Iraq in the Persian Gulf War. The main coalition forces invaded Kuwait and southern Iraq on February 24, 1991 and, over the next four days, encircled and defeated the Iraqis and liberated Kuwait. When President George Bush declared a cease-fire on February 28th, most of the Iraqi forces in Kuwait had either surrendered or fled. Schwarzkopf published his memoirs, It Doesn't Take a Hero, in 1992.
