Biography | show moreshow less
George Henry Dern (1872-1936) was an executive of his family's mining company when he discovered the Holt-Dern roaster, a process for smelting silver from low grade ore. Elected Governor of Utah as a Democrat in 1925 and re-elected in a landslide in a heavily Republican state, Dern served in that office through 1933, championing progressive measures in education, social welfare and tax reform. He was made Secretary of War by President Roosevelt in 1933, serving until his death. Although Dern was of pacifist inclinations, and the defense budget was a low priority during FDR's first term, Dern won the respect of military professionals by promoting modernization of equipment and organizational efficiency. He was the grandfather of actor Bruce Dern, and the great grandfather of actress Laura Dern.
