Biography
George M. Pullman (1831-1897), and a friend designed the Pullman Railroad Car with a folding upper berth (1864) and extensible seat cushions to make a lower berth. The Pullman Palace Car Co. was organized in 1867. Besides the sleeping car bearing his name, Pullman also devised dining cars (1868), chair cars (1875) and vestibule cars (1887).
