Died: September 27, 1897 in Trenton, New Jersey
Biography
George M. Robeson (1829-1897), a Union General during the American Civil War, served as Grant's Secretary of the Navy from June 25, 1869 to March 3, 1877. Robeson was repeatedly accused of corruption (bribery taking, and diversion of Navy funds for his private use), but was so adept at covering his financial tracks that he earned the nickname "Cuttlefish." Twice an unsuccessful candidate for U.S. Senator from New Jersey (1876, 1880), he served as a U.S. congressman for the state from 1879-1883.
