Biography | show moreshow less
Born on April 19, 1899, in San Francisco, California, George O'Brien was a prominent American actor recognized primarily for his roles in Western and adventure films. He rose to stardom in the silent film era, and his acting career spanned four decades, from the 1920s to the 1960s.

O'Brien's breakthrough role came in 1924 when he starred in John Ford's silent epic "The Iron Horse." His robust physique and natural charm made him an ideal fit for Western films, which subsequently became the genre with which he was most associated. The actor's most memorable performance is arguably in F.W. Murnau's classic silent film "Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans" (1927), which won an Academy Award for Unique and Artistic Picture. O'Brien's career slowed down in the 1960s, but he made occasional television appearances. His final role was in the John Wayne film "Cheyenne Autumn" (1964). In addition to his film career, O'Brien also served in the U.S. Navy during World War I and II, earning several military decorations.
