George Plimpton, (1927-2003), believed in participatory journalism. Seeking to improve his understanding of the subjects he reported on, Plimpton boxed heavyweight champion Archie Moore, played quarterback (briefly) for the Detroit Lions, pitched to major league hitters, entered golf tournaments, and even played percussion instruments with the New York Philharmonic.
