Biography | show moreshow less
George von Lengerke Meyer (1858-1918) was US Ambassador to Italy (1900-1905) and Russia (1905-1907). President Roosevelt used the blue blooded von Meyer for personal messages to Kaiser Wilhelm II and Tsar Nicholas II. He was Postmaster General (1907-1909) and Secretary of the Navy (1909-1913). Returning to civilian life, he was active in the National Security League and the Naval League, critical of what he deemed President Wilson's inadequate naval preparedness.
