George Washington McCrary (1835-1890) passed the Iowa bar at age 20, and served in the Iowa legislature before winning four terms in the US House of Representatives (1869-1877).  He helped create the special commission which resolved the dispute Presidential Election of 1876, and served on the committee investigating the Credit Mobilier scandal. As Secretary of War under President Hayes (1877-1879), he withdrew the last federal troops from the South. He resigned his Cabinet Posts to accept appointment as a US Circuit Court judge.
