Farrar (1896-1974) sang with the Metropolitan Opera from 1906 to 1922. Her chief roles included Carmen, Madame Butterfly, Manon, Mignon and Tosca. Farrar, known for her beauty and her acting talent as well as her fine soprano voice, had a large following of female fans, called Gerry-flappers. She appeared in several silent films. Cecil B. DeMille cast her as Joan of Arc in Joan the Woman (1916), the first film to use color scenes.
