GERALDO RIVERA
Born: July 04, 1943 in New York City, New York
Geraldo Rivera, born Gerald Michael Riviera on July 4, 1943, in Brooklyn, New York, is an American journalist, television host, attorney, and author. With a career spanning over five decades, Rivera has become a prominent and sometimes controversial figure in American journalism, known for his investigative reporting as well as his appearances as a talk show host and commentator.
Rivera grew up in Brooklyn and West Babylon, New York. After attending the State University of New York Maritime College, he earned his Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration from the University of Arizona. He later earned a Juris Doctor from Brooklyn Law School in 1969. Rivera then worked as an investigator for the New York City Police Department and as an attorney for a Puerto Rican activist group.
In 1970, Rivera began his career in journalism as a reporter for WABC-TV in New York. His investigation into the neglect and abuse of patients at Willowbrook State School, a mental institution on Staten Island, brought him national recognition. His reporting, which resulted in government action and widespread reforms, earned him a Peabody Award in 1972.
In 1987, Rivera became the host of the talk show "Geraldo," which ran until 1998. The show was known for its confrontational and sensational style. One of its most notorious episodes, in 1988, featured a brawl between guests that left Rivera with a broken nose.
Beyond his television career, Rivera has served as a correspondent for various networks, including ABC and Fox News. At Fox News, he has been a war correspondent, reporting on conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq, and a regular contributor to various news programs.
Rivera has authored several books, including an autobiography titled "Exposing Myself." His writings often explore issues related to his Puerto Rican and Jewish heritage, as well as his professional and personal life.
