Giacomo Puccini was born on December 22, 1858, in Lucca, Tuscany, Italy and he was an Italian composer best known for his operas, many of which remain central to the standard operatic repertoire. Puccini is considered one of the most prominent composers of Italian opera in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Puccini came from a family of musicians and began his formal music education at the Milan Conservatory in 1880. His early opera Le Villi (1884) attracted the attention of publisher Giulio Ricordi, leading to a professional relationship that supported much of his career. He also composed, Edgar (1889) and Manon Lescaut (1893). His three most enduring and frequently performed operas are La Bohème (1896), Tosca (1900), and Madama Butterfly (1904).

In 1910, Puccini premiered La Fanciulla del West at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. This work demonstrated a more modern harmonic language and featured a libretto by American playwright David Belasco. Other later works include La Rondine (1917) and the triptych Il Trittico (1918). Puccini’s final opera, Turandot, was left incomplete at the time of his death. It was completed by composer Franco Alfano and premiered in 1926 at La Scala in Milan.
