Biography
Gloria Swanson (1899-1983), was the biggest female star at Paramount by 1922. The actress, who was nominated for Academy Awards for Best Actress in 1929 (Sadie Thompson) and 1930 (The Trespasser), retired in 1934, but returned in 1941 for a comedy, Father Takes a Wife, opposite Adolphe Menjou. She made a memorable second comeback in 1950 as Norma Desmond in Sunset Blvd., for which she received her third Oscar nomination. Swanson was also known for her charcoal drawings. Some of these drawings and her serigraph for the U.N. stamp cachet are housed at the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center at the University of Texas at Austin.
