Lester Maddox (1915-2003), who was the owner and operator of a small diner before becoming Georgia's governor, was a segregationist. The purpose of the pickrick drumstick in his 1966 gubernatorial campaign was to demonstrate his staunch refusal to accept integration policies. Maddox was notorious for his refusing to allow his restaurant to be integrated in the 1960s, and he carried an axe handle, threatening to use it on those who might challenge him. Maddox served as Governor of Georgia from 1967 to 1971 and as Lieutenant Governor from 1971 to 1975 under Jimmy Carter during Carter's term as Governor of Georgia.
