Biography | show moreshow less
Sarah Palin (b. 1964), rose meteorically from Mayor of Wasilla, Alaska (1996-2002) to Governor of Alaska (2006) to the Republican Party's Vice Presidential nominee in 2008. While mayor she was elected President of the Alaska Council of Mayors in 1999. She was the first female Governor of Alaska, and the youngest. Vice Presidential candidates are often expected to be campaign "attack dogs", assailing the opposition while the Presidential candidate strives to appear "presidential." Palin proved extremely adept at this role, rousing crowds of supporters with fiery speeches and never shying away from controversy. The title of her book, Going Rogue, had originally been a complaint by McCain staffers that she wasn't clearing her campaign statements with them. Palin became a heroine to conservative voters during the campaign and to the "Tea Party" movement of opposition to the polices of President Obama. She resigned the governorship in 2009, claiming that she was having to spend too much of her time in office defending herself against allegations instead of doing the State's business. Others suspected she was freeing her schedule so she could mobilize her national supporters for a possible Presidential bid in 2012, or at least to remain a major player on the national scene.
