Biography
William Buckingham (1804-1875) was Governor of Connecticut during the American Civil War (1858-1866). A strong supporter of Abraham Lincoln, he hosted Lincoln when Lincoln campaigned in Connecticut, and a personal friendship formed between them. After leaving office, he was elected to the U.S. Senate on March 4, 1869, as a Republican, and served until 1875. Earlier Buckingham was the Mayor of Norwich, Connecticut as a Whig from 1849-1850 and again 1856-1857. The ship USS Governor Buckingham is named after him.
