GRANTLAND RICE
Born: November 01, 1880 in Murfreesboro, Tennessee
Died: July 13, 1954 in New York City, New York
Born on November 1, 1880, in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, Henry Grantland Rice was an esteemed American sportswriter renowned for his eloquent style and poetic descriptions of sports.
Rice graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1901, where he played football and baseball, laying the groundwork for his career. He began his writing career with the Atlanta Journal, where he met and mentored a young writer, Margaret Mitchell, who would later author "Gone with the Wind." In 1914, Rice started his long-term association with the New York Tribune (later the New York Herald Tribune), covering various sports and writing about notable events and figures of the time. His ability to weave narrative threads through sports events earned him the nickname "The Bard of the Ballpark." Rice is known for coining several famous phrases in American sports, including "It's not whether you win or lose, it's how you play the game." He also named the collegiate football backfield of Notre Dame as the "Four Horsemen" of Notre Dame, contributing to their legend. In 1954, Rice was awarded the J. G. Taylor Spink Award by the Baseball Writers' Association of America, a testament to his influence in sports journalism.
