Biography
Gregg Manners Sinclair was born in Ontario, Canada, but spent most of his life in the U.S. state of Hawaii. After earning his master's degree from Columbia University in 1919, he taught English overseas for a time before he moved to Hawaii to teach in 1928. After his marriage to novelist and historian Marjorie Putnam Sinclair, he was named University President, a position he held until 1956. One of his many interests was Japanese culture, which eventually led to the creation of the Oriental Institute at the University of Hawaii.
