Biography
GWENDOLYN BROOKS (1917-2000) won the Pulitzer Prize in 1950 for her second book of poetry, Annie Allen. By the late 1950s, her poems began to focus on the African-American struggle for freedom. In 1968, Brooks was named Poet Laureate of Illinois, succeeding Carl Sandburg, and in 1985 she was named library consultant to the Library of Congress. She was the National Endowment for the Humanities Jefferson Lecturer in 1994, the highest literary award bestowed by the federal government.
