Biography
HAMILTON FISH (1808-1893) served the United States as Secretary of State under President Ulysses S. Grant. Fish was an influential force in Grant's administration, an experienced statesmen where one was sorely needed. He was brought of retirement for the job. Having already served as Governor of New York and in both Houses of Congress, he was prepared for the position. Perhaps his biggest accomplishment while a member of Grant's cabinet was the development of international arbitration to settle disputes between nations. The United States and Great Britain settled the Alabama Claims without violence using this method. It was an effort at the time that pioneered the use of diplomacy rather than violence.
