HAROLD LLOYD
Born: April 20, 1893 in Burchard, Nebraska
Died: March 08, 1971 in Beverly Hills, California
Biography
Known as the "Man of the Clock" for his daring stunt in Safety Last (1923), Harold Lloyd (1893-1971) began his film career in 1912 with the Edison Film Company before joining Hal Roach in 1914. After a brief stunt with Mack Sennett, Lloyd rejoined Roach in 1916, and over the next year appeared in over 100 "shorts" as Lonesome Luke. Through the silent era, Lloyd became part of the Chaplin-Keaton-Lloyd comic box office triumvirate. Never using doubles for exceptionally brave stunts, he belied his be-spectacled, timid appearance. Parting from Roach in 1923, Lloyd went on to produce his own films and began building a palatial Hollywood estate, which he willed to California as a film museum. Lloyd, who was awarded a Special Academy Award in 1952, also appeared in such films as The Freshman (1925) and its sequel, The Sins of Harold Diddlebock (1947).
