HARRY RITZ
Born: May 22, 1907 in Newark, New Jersey
Died: March 29, 1986 in San Diego, California
HARRY RITZ (1907-1986) was part of a comedy trio with brothers Al and Jimmy, managed by a fourth brother, George. After a brief stint as "the Collegians," they began performing comedy routines as The Ritz Brothers. The team was known for slapstick dance routines, tongue-twisting banter, and wide-eyed expressions. Starting out in Broadway reviews, the Ritz Brothers made their Hollywood debut in Hotel Anchovy, in 1934. Other movie vehicles included Sing, Baby Sing (1936), Life Begins in College (1937), The Three Musketeers (1939) and Never a Dull Moment (1943). Harry was considered the most talented of the brothers, as they acknowledged in their routine "The Man in the Middle is the Funny One." Although their movie career waned, The Ritz Brothers remained popular thereafter in live appearances. Al died in 1965, but Jimmy and Harry were still sought after for guest appearances, especially after Mel Brooks called the Ritz Brothers his idols.
