Biography | show moreshow less
Helen Hull Jacobs (August 6, 1908 – June 2, 1997) was an eminent American tennis player, hailed for her remarkable achievements during the 1920s and 1930s. Born in Globe, Arizona, Jacobs's tennis prowess became evident early in her life, leading her to become one of the sport's dominant figures in her prime.

During her illustrious career, Jacobs secured five Grand Slam singles titles. Four of these were at the U.S. Championships (now known as the U.S. Open) in 1932, 1933, 1934, and 1935. Her fifth Grand Slam singles title was at Wimbledon in 1936. In addition to her singles victories, Jacobs also tasted success in doubles and mixed doubles, with ten Grand Slam titles in these categories combined. Jacobs was known for her intense rivalry with fellow tennis great Helen Wills Moody. Their on-court battles became the stuff of legend, with their 1933 U.S. Championship match particularly standing out, where Jacobs defeated Moody, ending the latter's 159-match winning streak.

A trailblazer off the court as well, Jacobs was the first woman to break with tradition by wearing man-tailored shorts at Wimbledon in 1933. This act was emblematic of her independent spirit and her willingness to challenge convention.

Beyond her achievements on the tennis court, Jacobs served in World War II as a commander in U.S. Naval Intelligence. After retiring from competitive tennis, she remained involved in the sport as a tennis writer and commentator, penning her autobiography "Beyond the Game" in 1936.
