Helen Jepson (1904-1997) was beloved by Americans as a native-born operatic soprano on stages dominated by foreign stars. Jepson, also a popular radio voice with the Rudy Vallée and Paul Whiteman bands, made her Metropolitan Opera debut in 1935. She was the first to record (with Lawrence Tibbett) the music from Porgy and Bess, and she was featured in the 1938 film, Goldwyn Follies. After a throat ailment forced her retirement in 1947, she was a successful teacher, active in charitable causes.
