HENRIETTA SZOLD
Born: December 21, 1860
Died: February 13, 1945
Biography
In 1912, Baltimore-born Henrietta Szold founded the Woman's Zionist Organization of America, Hadassah. She was its first president from 1912-1926, becoming the first woman elected to the World Zionist Organization in 1927. In 1920, Szold had moved to Palestine, where she directed medical and rehabilitation work, especially for children. Because of the rapid spread of anti-Semitism in Germany, the Jewish Agency for Palestine had to create a separate agency to handle the emigration of Jews from Germany.
