Henry Hart Milman (1791-1868) was a historian and ecclesiastic scholar. Born the third son of Sir Francis Milman, physician to King George III, Milman had a brilliant university career at Oxford, winning the Newdigate Prize for his poetry in 1812, was elected a fellow of Brasenose in 1814, and won the English essay prize in 1816 for his Comparative Estimate of Sculpture and Painting. In 1816 he was ordained and became a parish priest of St. Mary's in Reading, and only a few years later he was elected a professor of poetry at Oxford. In 1835 he was named by Sir Robert Peel as Rector of St. Margaret's in Westminster, and in 1849 was named Dean of St. Paul's Cathedral. However, Milman is best remembered for his literary career which included several poetic and theological writings. His best known work is his History of Jews (1829), the first work of English theology to subject the Bible to historical criticism; he also wrote the History of Christianity (1840), History of Latin Christianity (1854), as well as several book of poems such as Hymns (1837), Psalms and Hymns (1837).
