Henry Watterson (1840-1921), a prominent US journalist, founded the Louisville Courier-Journal in 1868. A Confederate soldier in the Civil War. Elected to the US Congress as a Democrat (1876-1877), Watterson advocated a popular march on Washington in support of Samuel Tilden during the prolonged dispute over whether Tilden or Rutherford had won the Presidential election of 1876. The author of several books, including a history of the Spanish-American War, Watterson won a Pulitzer Prize in 1918 for editorials supporting US entry into World War I.
